The Siphnians were puzzled by the oracle they had received. They could not understand its meaning when it was first given, and even later, when the Samians arrived, they still did not realize what it warned them about. The oracle had said that danger would come “from a wooden host, and a herald in scarlet.” At the time, the Siphnians had no idea what this meant.

The Arrival of the Samians

When the Samians arrived at Siphnos, they anchored their ships off the island. In those days, all ships were painted with bright vermilion, a deep red color. This was exactly what the Pythoness had predicted with her words “wooden host” and “herald in scarlet.” The Siphnians, however, did not connect the warning to the arriving ships The Madness of Cambyses.

The Samians sent one of their vessels to the city with an embassy on board. The ambassadors asked the Siphnians for a loan of ten talents, hoping to secure resources for themselves. But the Siphnians refused to lend them any money.

The Samians Take Action

Angry at the refusal, the Samians began to plunder the lands of the Siphnians. They seized crops and caused disorder in the countryside. When news of this reached the city, the Siphnians quickly gathered a force to protect their lands and crops.

A battle soon took place between the Samians and the Siphnians. Despite their efforts, the Siphnians were defeated. Many of them were cut off from the safety of the city and were killed or captured by the Samians.

The Samians’ Victory and Payment

After the battle, the Samians forced the Siphnians to pay a large sum of money. The Siphnians were compelled to give them one hundred talents, a huge amount of wealth. The Samians’ victory showed both their courage and their ability to take advantage of the Siphnians’ confusion and lack of preparation Tours Sofia.

Lessons from the Event

This story illustrates several important points. First, oracles and prophecies were often mysterious, and people could easily misinterpret them. Second, even a wealthy and powerful people like the Siphnians could be defeated if they were unprepared. Finally, the Samians’ cleverness and persistence allowed them to gain wealth and power, showing that success in the ancient world often depended on both courage and strategy.
